binary stars and star evolution:
between 1971 and 1980 has been involved in the observation of interacting close
binary stars systems, and in the study of their evolutionary path.
computer science: in
1982-92 involved in the design, development and management of the Italian
Network ASTRONET.
remote
observing and control:
- involved
in the project of European
Southern Observatory (ESO) for remote observing;

Technical Manager for OATs of the REMOT project of EU Telematics for
Research (1996-98);

Technical Manager for OATs of the DYNACORE project of EU Telematics for
Research (1999-2001), aimed at remote monitoring, controlling and operating
large scientific facilities;
- Leader
of the Joint Research Action “Virtual Presence” of the EU/FP7 project EVALSO
(2008-2010).
telescopes
and instruments control systems:
- in
1974-77 responsible for the design and development of the control system for
the first italian computer controlled astronomical instrument (URSULA);
- in
1976-89 involved in the design and development of a real-time multiprocessor
data analysis system, and of up-to-date data rendering and presentation systems
(hardware and software);
- in
1988-98 responsible of the design and development of the high level
control system of the Italian National Galileo Telescope (TNG);
- in
1996-2001 responsible for the design and development of the control system of
the DOLORES spectrograph for TNG;

currently involved in the design and development of a new generation control system,
to be used as a general purpose building block for the development of modern
astronomical instruments.

Responsible of the sub-workpackage “Telescope Control and Monitoring” of the
EU/FP7 project EST (2008-2010).
Member of the International
Astronomical Union since 1976. Member of the Commissions 5 and 9 of the
IAU.
Affiliate member of IEEE since 1996.
Member of the European Physical Society and of the Experimental
Physics Control Systems (EPCS) since 1998.
Member of
the Councils of the Observatories of Trieste, Padova and Bologna till 2000.
Author/co-author of more than 180 scientific/technical
papers and research notes.
